Nigel on changes this season:
- American Idol will kick off its first theme week during the semifinalists rounds. For the top twelve girls and top twelve boys performance shows, the theme will be songs from the sixties. Contestants will still be able to choose their own songs, but they will be asked to select from fifty approved songs from the sixties.
- American Idol contestants will be able to use instruments during the regular competition as well this year.
Nigel addresses the controversies here. Carly Smithson - Will all of this negative publicity affect the voting? Nigel doesn't think the voters read the blogs. REALLY...huh. I, for one, will base it on her performance. She doesn't get a free pass from me, nor does she lose a chance to win my vote.
Talkin all things American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars and other QUALITY Reality and Drama TV!

Top 12 GIRLS Perform - Reviews / Predictions
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have ourselves a competition. I will update the reviews later today. Predictions are at the end of this post.
Stephanie Edwards - "How Come You Don't Call Me"
I thought Stephanie did great! Coming out first after the disaster last night. She looked poised and confident. I also think she is really likable.
Amy Krebs - "I Can't Make You Love Me"
Simon was right about her being ordinary, the hair, the clothes. I don’t think she will last very long unless she survives this week and we see something drastically different.
Leslie Hunt - "Natural Woman"
I really liked Leslie’s look and her hair. Her stylist did a great job with her highlights! Her singing nothing special. I’d like to see her again so I hope she survives another week.
Sabrina Sloan - "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Loved You"
Sabrina sang this song really well. Don’t know if her style of singing can easily translate into some of the themes that go along with American Idol? I also don’t think she is really all that likable?
Antonella Barba - "Don't Want to Miss a Thing"
Antonella has probably gotten more screen time than just about anybody else this year. Would she be this years Kelly Pickler? The untrained voice? Doesn't look like it. I think she will survive because of her TV time...this time. Making the big stage just became a lot harder for her than it had to be.
Jordin Sparks - "Give Me One Reason"
I really like Jordin. She reminds me vocally a little of Kimberly Locke - Season 2. Lots of power in her voice. She is young and it showed a little, but she seems to be fearless, a good trait for this program. Jordin is a perfect fit!
Haley Scarnato - "It's All Coming Back to Me Now"
Haley has a really interesting tone to her voice, and I think she did well enough to advance another week. Nothing special so far, more middle of the pack, top of the bottom.
Nicole Tranquillo - "Star"
It took awhile to find the name of the song performed by Nicole. Really difficult to even understand the lyrics she sang. Credit to Laura at idolreview.net for the find. That isn’t going to bode well for her.
Melinda Doolittle - "Since You've Been Gone"
American Idol, the machine, seems to want Melinda to do well. Well, thats OK because so do I.
Alaina Anderson – “Brass in My Pocket”
I think Alaina has a great personality for this show. Whether or not she has any vocal ability has yet to be determined? Nto a really good performance, but not the worst, for me.
Gina Glocksen - "All By Myself"
Well, while Gina has gotten alot of screen time over the past two seasons, we've really only seen her sing snippets here and there. I really didn't want her to sing Celine Dion, but it turned out OK. Sorry Gina, you didn't hit that note though! Simon was right.
Lakisha Jones - "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"
Wow. When I heard whatLakisha was singing, my first inclination was to hate it. That is my girl Jennifer's song! I think it's interesting Simon told Lakisha she is in a different league, after telling Jennifer she wasn't good enough...heh!
My bottom 3: Antonella, Amy, Nicole
VFTW supporting: Antonella Barba
Dial Idol Results:
Laskisha Jones – 37.128
Antonella Barba – 18.205
Melinda Doolittle – 14.923
Jordin Sparks – 14.487
Stephanie Edwards – 11.564
Haley Scarnato – 10.692
Nicole Tranquillo - 9.769
Gina Glocksen – 9.385
Sabrina Sloan – 8.718
Leslie Hunt – 8.538
Amy Krebs – 6.769
Alaina Anderson – 2.41
This makes a little more sense. Obviously this early in the competition "Vote for the Worst" seems to be having some impact.

Top 12 GUYS Perform - Reviews / Predictions
Well, that wasn't very encouraging now was it? I seem to remember something like this last year? I think we did the Girls first though, and they were a little disappointing overall? Then the Guys came on and brought it. And, maybe this is our fault. "Stop singing the same old songs" we say over and over. This was a night of BAD SONG CHOICES. My recollection of last year is that things got a lot better week 2. Lets hope so.
Rudy Cardenas - "Free Ride"
This song showed off Rudy's vocal skills I think. But, I felt like I was at the circus? Him running around the stage...what was that all about? His facial expressions bug me too. He will never survive unless he shows me something really unique. He does seem to have the chops, I just don't care for how he uses them. I'm not sure there is anything he can do about that either?
Brandon Rogers - "Rock with You"
Well Brandon showed me something last night. He knows how to work the camera. I think Brandon can go far if he makes better song choices. I think he has the chops and the looks. Brandon, next week...PICK A BETTER SONG.
Sundance Head - "Knights in White Satin"
Vocally, I didn't think this was as bad as the panel tonight. It was a poor song choice , again, but I thought Sundance did a decent job at it. A couple of pitchy points, but the song showed off his strong voice. Poor Sundance looked scared to death.
Paul Kim - "Careless Whisper"
I just don't like this guy. Stop talking about your feet! That is disgusting. I don't know what else to say.
Chris Richardson - "I Don't Want To Be"
OK...Chris. This started out really bad for me. Chris jumping up and down behind the mike. Now I see him...now I don't? I felt like I was at a high school pep rally or something. If you stand behind the mike you need to stand relatively STILL. Once Chris moved out from behind the mike it got better for me. He's no Elliot Yamin, but I can see some appeal.
Nick Pedro - "Now and Forever"
I really like the tone of Nick's voice. Like I have said before though, I am afraid he will be categorized as boring? I don't think he has much in the charisma department either. This show really is about being different and having some personality. I'm not sure Nick brings that to this competition.
Blake Lewis - "Somewhere Only We Know"
Wow. I am not sure what I expected from Blake, but it wasn't that. What WAS that? I hate when the kids sing a song I don't know, because sometimes I can't tell if they are even in key? Blake's performance was good though. He did the best job of surprising me which in this competition is a good thing.
Sanjanya Malakar - "Knocks Me Off My Feet"
You know I really liked this performance. I was on my feet afterwards, and then quietly sat down after the judges were through with him. Was it really that bad? I thought he seemed pretty comfortable on stage? He sang it well? Maybe a little boring, but for me a faster beat has poor Sanjaya doing that silly back and forth dance thing he does? Would that be better?
Chris Sligh - "Typical"
I must be getting old. I don't know any of these songs. Sometimes I hear something that sounds maybe a little familiar, and then I think " are they singing it badly? Is that why I don't recognize it?" I really like Chris, and thought his vocals were really good, but didn't care for the performance. I want to hear something...I don't know...different. Is it the band? I felt tonight we could barely hear some of these guys, between the music and the people standing and clapping along. How am I supposed to judge their voices when I can't even hear them over all the noise? All of the more upbeat/rockin songs were that way for me tonight.
Jared Cotter - "Back at One"
A little cheesy, but another one that knows how to work the camera's and the ladies. I'd like a better song choice, that is all. Am I getting repetitive?
AJ Tabaldo - "Never Too Much"
Another dance around and I can't hear you over the band and the crowd. I am really getting worried about this season. I hope the ones that make it through do better next week. They say the vocals were good? I could barely hear the vocals over the crowd and AJ's boppin around the stage.
Phil Stacey - "I Could Not Ask for More"
Started out bad and didn't get much better...for me. Apparently the judges felt differently? Maybe they are just concerned about their jobs? What will I do next year, they are thinking. For me, Phil has funny facial expressions too...like Rudy. I don't see him going to the big stage. But what do I know?
My bottom 3: Rudy, Paul, AJ
VFTW supporting: Sundance Head
Dial Idol results:
Sundance Head 23.514
Chris Richardson 18.405
Sanjaya Malakar 17.243
Phil Stacey 15.973
Blake Lewis 15.757
Brandon Rogers 15.432

Top 12 GIRLS

OKAY...here we go! The girls are much tougher for me than the guys. Some of my opinions will change I am sure after their performances, but again, these are MY first impressions of their chances.
Alaina Alexander, 24 – I like her look. She’s different and I think she could make the Top 12. I am not sure at this point how well she can sing?
Amy Krebs, 22 – Boy, tough one because I don’t know anything about her and wasn’t overly impressed with her singing. She kind of has a different look, so she could advance…an outside chance.
Antonella Barba, 20 – Antonella probably got more TV time this year than any other girl, so I would expect her to be a shoe-in. She has a very contemporary look, and so far not a bad voice.
Gina Glocksen, 22 – I am a little biased here, because I have seen Gina perform with her band Catfight a couple of times. I have mixed feelings about Gina, because at this point she isn’t one of my fav’s, but she’s a home town girl so she will get votes from me! She got a lot of TV time last year and I expect her to move on easily to the Top 12.
Haley Scarnato, 24 – I wrote up Haley last because I didn’t know what to say. I have a feeling she has some pipes on her that might take her deep into the competition. Guess we’ll find out Wednesday.
Jordin Sparks, 17 – Cute girl, famous Papa, sounds like a sure thing to me. She is one of only two (Sanjaya) young enough to need tutoring, and the competition wouldn’t be the same without a few youngin’s!
Lakisha Jones, 27 – Powerful voice, and this competition seems important to her. The comparisons to Mandisa are certainly there. Will that hurt her or help? She seems a little more “likable”? Time will tell.
Leslie Hunt, 24 – Hmmm, again she’s different which always helps in this competition. I just don’t know about Leslie…?
Melinda Doolittle, 29 – One of the favorites for sure. Loved her audition, and hope she continues to be as good. Pretty much a lock for Top 6 girls.
Nicole Tranquillo, 20 – When I started writing up the girls, I couldn’t even remember this one? Who knows…she could have an amazing voice. Put it this way, she HAS to have an amazing voice to advance.
Sabrina Sloan, 27 – I don’t know, something about her bugs me? That really isn’t fair at this point, I know. Prove me wrong Sabrina and I will eat my words!
Stephanie Edwards, 19 – Seems to be one of the more likable of the “no TV time” bunch. She might have an outside shot.
My choice for the Top 6 GIRLS....Alaina, Antonella, Gina, Jordin, Lakisha, Melinda.
Alaina Alexander, 24 – I like her look. She’s different and I think she could make the Top 12. I am not sure at this point how well she can sing?

Top 12 GUYS

While I think it is too early to really be handicapping these kids...I'm gonna do it anyway! I think I have watched this show enough to know what it is America is looking for. So here goes...
AJ Tabaldo, 22 - I think this kid will be a casualty before we get to the final 6 guys.
Blake Lewis, 25 - Engaging, but I'm not sure how well he really can sing. He may be an entertainer, but that's not what this show is about. Fair chance to make top 6 guys.
Brandon Rogers, 28 - Lots of personality, great stage presence and voice. Should be a lock.
Chris Richardson, 22 - I am not a fan of "boy band" type singers, which is the group I put Chris in. Better chance than some.
Chris Sligh, 28 - Funny, and great sound. Lots of buzz about this guy. Another lock for top 6.
Jared Cotter, 25 - Don't know much of anything abou this guy but liked his voice. Fair chance.
Nicholas Pedro, 25 - Has a great tone to his voice, but could come across as "boring"? We'll see.
Paul Kim, 25 - America is not interested in barefoot Paul. Won't make it.
Phil Stacey, 29 - Pregnant women and mothers will not vote for this guy who left his wife to give birth alone.
Rudy Cardenas, 28 - I read and hear he's got a great voice, but have yet to see it. I find him a little annoying.
Sanjaya Malakar, 17 - Really cute and if he doesn't fall apart in the next three weeks, he'll go deep into the competition.
Sundance Head, 28 - Hmmm....one of the more interesting of the bunch. He seems to keep sticking his foot in his mouth in sort of an endearing way?
I know this isn't really fair, because we haven't even seen any performances yet. So, these are nothing more than first impressions...so lets see how I do! Good luck to all 12! Nothing will make me happier than some of you proving me wrong. After all, this IS American Idol!
My picks for Top 6 GUYS are... Brandon, Chris R, Chris S, Jared, Sanjaya, Sundance.
