Another stellar episode of Friday Night Lights! I am starting to figure out what everyone's been up to, and am glad to have them back in my life. More than any other show on TV I care about these characters and feel like they are all someone I know, or have know in my life.
Anyway, on to the recap. Tami is interviewed by a local reporter regarding the diversion of the JumboTron money to academics. The reporter asks whether this issue makes things difficult at home, Tami responds "at the end of the day, we both respect each other". Well, the story doesn't go well. The Taylors pretty much take it in stride. This isn't even a hurdle, and Eric supports Tami, well, non-verbally. You know what I'm talking about right? Tami is bitching, and Eric is nodding his head, but not really listening. They are the perfect couple right??
Let's see...what else? Buddy is not happy that Lyla is dating Riggins. "He is white trash and will drag you down". To which Lyla resonds "Maybe he just needs someone to believe in him?" Tim also recieved a letter of interest from Oklahoma and he seems to have zero interest in college, even if it means playing football. It's OK Tim, we would keep you around for another year at Dillon High ... am I right?
Meanwhile Tyra is running for Student Council President, as part of Tami's plan to get her into college. Unfortunately no one is taking Tyra seriously. Tyra reverts to using promises to the student body that they won't have Prom in the Gym so that everyone will have a chance to get laid. Tyra ends up winning, but when she goes to share the good news with Tami, she encounters Tami pretty pissed off at her tactics. Tyra seems to shoot herself in the foot sometimes. But, with Tami and Landry on her side I have no doubt she will make it.
Matt and Julie run into each other a few times this episode, both seem to be feeling the other out. Possibly a reconciliation? Hmmm...
Poor poor Matt. His grandmother has decided she doesn't want to take her medication because it dries her skin out. The doctor won't give Matt the medicine because he's only 17, but warns that his grandmother's dimentia is getting worse. An attorney tells Matt if he emancipates himself from his parents he can legally take care of his grandmother. Therefore, we finally meet the woman (pictured above) who gave birth to Matt. Matt travels to visit his mother because he needs the emancipation papers signed and doesn't want to try and track down his father in Iraq.
In some good news, Eric gets Smash a try out with Texas A&M in two weeks. However, he is still concerned about his progress. Coach Taylor gets the whole team to dress and run some plays with Smash. Playing again fully dressed with the team invigorates Smash and he shouts "Smash is back!"
Overall, a great start to the new season! I can't wait for next Friday!

Friday Night Lights - "I Knew You When"
My first reaction to the FNL season premiere was I NEED MORE! Why couldn't we have a 4 hour - 2 night event like "24" had? I mean it has been a year...
Here are some of the highlights of the premiere episode:
1) Tami Taylor is the new principle of the high school. A step up (or down - depending on your point of view) from the school counselor job she has held in seasons past. This job will inevitably mean less time spent with the students, a well as her family. I just love Tami, played brilliantly by Connie Britton. One of my favorite lines of the night, from the new principle to the Coach, "is that a new computer?"
2) Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) has been working with Smash (Gaius Charles) to get him back in shape after his knee injury from last season. Smash has already lost his scholarship, but is hopeful for next year if he can get back into top form. Smash gives up after his doctor pronounces him "cured" and says he may never be able to be the player he was. Coach Taylor guarantees Smash a scholarship and football, if he wants it. He will work with him to get it. When asked why - "because I need something good to happen".
3) Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) and Landry (Jesse Plemons) have "broken up", or are "taking a break", depending on who you ask. After all of the work Tami put in last season with Tara, the Vice Principle tells Tara to give up on her dream of going to a state school. Her grade point average will never get her in. Deflated, but not wanting to end up like her mother and sister, Tara turns to Tami and Landry for help. The girl can't go wrong with those two on her side. PLUS, she has a new "hairdo"!
4) Lyla (Minka Kelly) and Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) are back together (sort of), much to her father's chagrin. Partying together over the summer was fine, but now that they are back to school they are having some difficulty adjusting. It wouldn't be a recap without a picture of Riggins right??
5) Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) is not happy with the commitment of his new full back (Riggins), who has replaced Smash since graduation. Lurking also is the new kid in town, a freshman with the arm of Jason Street and a father with a lot of influence. His father owns the largest beer distributorship in Texas. Money and influence will not budge Coach Taylor from keeping Matt as the starter, but given a game situation where Matt isn't getting it done, you can bet he will put the new kid in the game. Even if he does so with a heavy heart.
Have I covered everything? I did say it was the highlights right? But, isn't it great having the people of Dillon back? And...so begins the wait for next Friday.

Friday Night Lights - Season Premiere!

Friday Night Lights Season 3 debuts on NBC this Friday, January 16th at 9/8 CST. HOORAY!! As many of you may know, Friday Night Lights got a shot at a 3rd season when it joined forces with DirectTV last spring. This past fall the shows 3rd season ran on DirectTV in its entirety and now it is starting up on NBC for the rest of us. I haven't seen any of it and am looking forward to seeing all of my friends in Dillon, TX!
A programming note: The show is showing up on my DVR as a REPEAT, so be sure your DVR's are properly set to record repeats. I am guessing this is because it has already aired on DirectTV?
If you haven't seen this show - give it a shot. It's an amazing show and you will thank me! I hear it's a great season!

Friday Night Lights - Devil Town!
A DirectTV teaser for FNL:
I cannot wait for this show and am really conflicted about when to watch it because I don't have DirectTV! I want to wait and watch it "live" on NBC in 2009, but doubt I will be able to wait...
"I was livin' in a devil town...
Didn't know it was a devil town..."

NBC Renews FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!

Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that NBC has struck a deal to partner with DirecTV to SAVE Friday Night Lights !!
Here's an excerpt from the article:
This is great news to that small but passionate audience for the best TV series you're not watching. I'm told that Jeff Zucker, Marc Graboff and Ben Silverman had been searching for a way to renew the critically acclaimed but low-rated Friday Night Lights for a 3rd season so that it would still make financial sense. The answer came in a deal with DirecTV, now owned by John Malone's Liberty Media. Clearly Malone is looking to distinguish DirecTV from its rivals on a content as well as price basis. "It's an innovative deal where NBC found a partner who will share costs and exhibition windows," an insider explained to me. So both NBC and DirecTV will be airing Friday Night Lights across multipurpose platforms.
The article goes on to say:
I can't say whether the fans' campaign to save the show by sending all those mini- footballs to NBC bigwigs worked the magic. But I do know the execs got them. Plus, the NBC suits knew that since the network is airing crap like that remake of Knight Rider (and shame on TV viewers for giving it good ratings), then they needed quality like FNL.

Friday Night Lights - Save The Show Initiatives
savefridaynightlights.tv has been raising money in an attempt to convince NBC to renew Friday Night Lights for a 3rd season. On Monday they shipped (pictured above) 6,250 mini footballs to NBC, which is only shipment #1. To date the sight has raised enough money for 16,250 mini footballs!
Due to the tremendous response from the FNL fans, the site has also begun donating 15% of each goals proceeds to the Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, a charity that Taylor Kitsch (Tim Riggins) works with.
Finally, the site has raised $924 to send Friday Night Lights DVD's to troops stationed overseas.
NBC plans to announce it's 52 week schedule in April.
Clear eyes. Full Hearts. Can't Lose.

Friday Night Lights Could Return for a Third Season!

HALLELUYAH!
Variety is reporting that NBC is shopping around the idea of saving the critically acclaimed Friday Night Lights by sharing the drama with a second network!
Read on:
"Friday Night Lights" may shine on for another season -- and on more than one network.
NBC Universal execs have decided they want to go the extra yard to ensure the drama returns for a third season. To make sure that happens, conglom is having serious conversations with several networks about a plan to carve out multiple broadcast windows for the show, which has received critical worship and has a cult-like following.
Peacock has had talks with the CW, Comcast Entertainment Networks (E!/G4) and TNT about sharing "Friday Night Lights" with NBC. DirecTV, which last year picked up the rights to NBC sudser "Passions," has also been brought into the mix.

Friday Night Lights - May the Best Man Win
Sorry for the delay in the FNL recap! I have been putting this off, primarily because I haven’t wanted to say goodbye to all my friends in Dillon, TX. This episode has been called the season finale, but it was never meant to be. Had it not been for the WGA strike, we would simply be talking about the juicy new story lines (Jason!) and settling in for the 4th quarter. BUT, Friday Night Light’s fate for the remainder of this season, and any other season has not been decided. With that being said, we take what we can get.
In the opener, we learn that Jason (Scott Porter) is going to be a Dad! Well, if he can convince the waitress he knocked up to keep the baby! Jason was led to believe fathering a child was an impossibility since his accident, and is out to make the best of this “miracle”. He turns on all of his charm and salesmanship, but freaks out the girl. He turns to Coach for advice, and towards the end of the episode seems like he might be convincing her to at least “consider” keeping the baby.
We have a cameo from Peter Berg (FNL executve producer) playing an old boyfriend of Tami’s (Connie Britton) who is back in Dillon to buy some commercial real estate. We have some funny scenes between the three of them as Eric (Kyle Chandler) grudgingly goes along with the dinner invitations, coaching advice, etc. Eric has had enough of this “old flame”, and after accepting a challenge to have one too many after dinner drinks (whiskey), finally erupts and punches him, causing Tami to leave the restaurant unescorted, shaking her head with disgust.
Smash (Gaius Charles) continues to worry about his future, chasing down the schools he rejected the first time around, only to find them no longer interested. Coach convinces him to go with him to visit Whitmore College. This is a long way from the type of school Smash had envisioned for his future. Their coach wins him over when he talks about having followed Smash since 7th grade knowing he was going to be something special.
Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) finagles himself an audition at the Christian radio station doing a sports talk show. The phones are ringing off the hook with the ladies all trying to get a date with Riggins…haha! This annoys Lyla (Minka Kelly), but not “the boyfriend” Chris, since he thinks he has Lyla wrapped around his finger. Tsk tsk…Riggins is much more dangerous than you will ever know Chris!
Finally, Lyla is spending the weekend with Chris’ family at their ranch. Somehow Lyla is going to have to get out of this relationship, didn’t she look uncomfortable at dinner? And, Chris is a little too confident for my tastes.
Overall, a good episode, too bad it probably was the season finale.

Friday Night Lights - Leave No One Behind
Amazing performances this episode from Matt (Zach Gilford) and Smash (Gaius Charles), in particular, but some great turns by Landry (Jesse Plemons), Julie (Aimee Teegarden), well the whole cast as USUAL! Here are some of the highlights.
To start off Coach Taylor has some words of inspiration for the team:
"Smash IS suspended for three games. THIS is about more than just football gentlemen. It's about adversity and how we stand up to it."
"Noone said they were going to hand us the playoffs. What we are gonna do is we are gonna WORK, we are gonna ADJUST, and we are gonna WORK some more. We are gonna take adversity, and we are gonna ride that ASSET all the way to the damn playoffs. Let's get to work."
And boy, this episode was all about adversity. Smash is trying to make the best of a bad situation, but things continue to decline for him. TMU has rescinded their scholarship offer based on what they called his questionable character. The scenes where Smash shows the letter to Coach, "this is my future",
and with his Mamma, "So, you want to tell me I told you so?" were pretty powerful. Mamma: "No. I just want to let you know I love you... and I believe in you".
Then, his final turn giving a pep talk to the team before the game, "This could be the last team I ever play for", and "Remember, we are The Dillon Panthers - State Champions!", hit home for him as well:
Matt continues to reel from Carlotta's sudden departure, skipping school and practice, and in the end, turning to Riggins for solice, who we know is the master at drowning his sorrows in a bottle:
Coach Taylor gives Matt some leaway until he is called to the hospital because Matt is too drunk to drive his grandmother home after she bumps her head getting out of bed. Matt had been out at a strip club with Riggins and had not gotten his messages. Coach shuttles them both home safely, and after seeing Matt's grandmother to bed lays into Matt, in another poweful scene, "What is going on with you? You are letting everyone down. Your team, your grandmother!"
Matt to Coach Taylor: "You left me for the TMU job, your daughter left me for another guy, my father left me to fight a damn war!"
"What's wrong with me? Why does everybody leave me?"
Finally, Tyra continues to question her feelings for Landry, that are intensified by jealousy. In the end Landry gets the girl, but does he win?
With only one show remaining, I am very saddened that the ratings continue to decline for this incredible show, and I fear for it's future. My hope is that a cable network picks up this show if it is not renewed by NBC next season. Perhaps that would be a better fit for a show that requires an investment, and demands your attention. I for one, will continue to champion this show. I'd hate to think next week could be goodbye.

Friday Night Lights - Humble Pie

This third to last episode of the season opens with Smash (Gaius Charles) being arrested at home for the scuffle at the movie theater the previous week. This hits Mama Smash from out of the blue since neither Smash or his sister told her anything about it. Mama Smash calls Coach and he meets them down at the station. Their lawyer convinces Smash to make a public apology to "make this go away". Smash is hesitant at first, but Mama and Coach convince him it's for the best.
Meanwhile, we learn that FNL has found a way to bring Jason (Scott Porter) back when he needs some costly work done on his truck. He vents to Buddy that he needs his truck to keep his independence. Buddy suggests Jason try his hand at selling cars. Jason agrees and tackles this job, as we would expect, full force. The other salesmen and women aren't very welcoming to the new kid in a wheelchair. Jason stumbles a bit at first, but after a pep talk from Buddy, sells a car to the local tire kicker. Jason shows Buddy, the other salespeople, and himself that a winning attitude can accomplish anything.
At the Taylor's we discover that Coach (Kyle Chandler) , as athletic director, has been saddled with finding a replacement volleyball coach for the women's 0-7 team. He steamrolls Tami (Connie Britton) into taking one for the team "did you not just say to me you wanted more exercise?". Apparently Tami played some varsity volleyball back in her day. After a frustrating practice, Tyras height catches Tami's eye while she's over visiting Julie (Aimee Teegarden). Tami uses Coach's tactics to convince Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) to take one for the team, "it would be good for you". Tami convinces Trya to channel some energy into her game by thinking of the volleyball as someone she is frustrated with. While Riggins continues to fulfill his duties helping coach with the other sports, Tyra sees Tim as fulfilling that role, leading the team to their first victory of the season. Imagine what she could do if she vented towards Landry's new "girlfriend"!
Speaking of Landry (Jesse Plemons), he's found a new admirer-er in his Physics partner, Jean. Tyra is not too happy finding these two spending a lot of time together. "God's gift to Landry" his teammates call the freshman, when she delivers Landry a CD of metal music for him to listen to in his car, his bed, WHATEVER. Is that steam coming out of Tyra's ears?? Hmmm...Landry may have finally found the way to her heart.
Tim (Taylor Kisch) has a run in with "Meth Man" at the convenience store leaving him with some bruises and a threat to return the $3000 by the end of the week. Seeing his life flash before his eyes, Tim makes a final play for Lyla (Minka Kelly). He had candles and made chicken for heavens sake! But, in the end (of that story line - thankfully), Lyla tells Tim to "move on". Somehow she also came up with $3000 to bail Tim out, because she doesn't want to see him get beaten up anymore.
Things continue to heat up between Lyla and her new beau Chris, especially after the whole Tim thing. She confesses to him about her history with Tim, and it seems to bring them closer together. "Say something!", Lyla says, "I am thinking how hard it must have been for you to tell me that". Awwww. Maybe Chris gave her the money?
Unfortunately for Smash things aren't going as well. After Smash sees his sister is receiving harassing phone calls, he catches the white boy from the theater telling the press he doesn't accept Smash's apology, prompting Smash to sound off to a reporter about the truth. The "truth" gets Smash in some deep doodoo, causing the court to suspend him for the next 3 games. "That's the whole season!", says Smash. "how are we going to get to state?". Watch for this story line to unfold over the final two episodes.
I guess we will find out next week. Can we have some football next week FNL? Please! All in all a good episode, setting things up for the final two of the season.

Friday Night Lights - Who Do You Think You Are?

This episode begins with the Taylor's struggling with what to do with "Gracie-belle" during working hours now that Shelly is no longer living with them. A sudden vacancy at a Day Care forces Tami (Connie Britton) to have to face the decision sooner than she is prepared for. Tami "chickens out" on her first three attempts, forcing her and Eric (Kyle Chandler) to discuss their decision to allow Tami to continue working, instead of staying home and caring for Gracie.
Coach tells Tami he read on the Internet that this separation anxiety is normal, and reminds her that part of the reason he left the TMU job was so she could continue working at a job she loves.
Meanwhile, Matt (Zach Gilford) learns that Carlotta has suddenly been called back to Guatemala, because her "family needs her". Matt struggles with his feelings for Carlotta, knowing that there isn't much he can do,"I'm in high school". He accompanies Carlotta to a family event and tells her he doesn't want her to leave, and he loves her. Matt later returns home from school to find a note on his bed. "She had to leave a day early" his grandma tells him, "she wanted to say goodbye". We need more of Matt FNL!
Next, Santiago is tracked down by a buddy of his that has just gotten out of prison. He successfully avoids the temptation to skip school and hang out, but is eventually lulled into hanging out with his old gang. Buddy finds them and invites Santiago's friends over for pizza. "Friends of Santiago's are welcome here anytime". Buddy struggles with showing Santiago he trusts him and opening his home to a bunch of "thugs". He seeks counsel from the Taylor's, and decides to leave his prize possessions on the mantle for the pizza party. After the "party" Santiago finds someone lifted Buddy's prized watch from the party, and goes to retrieve it. "Don't hate me because somebody is giving me a chance.", he tells his old friend, a fight ensues, but he retrieves Buddy's watch.
Elsewhere, Noel invites Smash's family over for dinner, not knowing the purpose of the dinner is for her parents to ambush them with concerns about their interracial relationship, hoping to get the support of Smash's mom. "It's a different world now", Smash (Gaius Charles) objects, but finds his mother agrees with their concerns about the relationship causing Smash to feel betrayed. Against the wishes of both their parents, Smash and Noel meet anyway when he agrees to take his younger sister to a movie. Racism raises it's ugly head at the theatre, and the trio have to leave early to avoid a fight. Smash struggles with his inability to do anything about this without the support of his mother.
In the final story line of the episode, Lyla (Minka Kelly) finds work at a talk Christian radio station alongside a fellow Christian teen, and current host, Chris Kennedy. We get a brief glimpse of Jason (Scott Porter), as Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) makes a prank call from Jason's apartment into the station pretending to be a girl with a question for Lyla. "Is that how you show a girl you like her?", Jason questions Tim. Later, listening to Lyla on the radio, Tim renews his feelings for Lyla, stops to buy her flowers to apologize for the call, heads to the radio station, only to find Lyla and her co-host in an embrace. Tim pitches the flowers and escapes the station before being discovered by Lyla. Tim ,Tim, Tim...
We close the show with the Taylor's (together) successfully dropping "Gracie-belle" off at the Day Care on their Day 4 attempt...
As much as I love Friday Night Lights, I think they are falling victim to too many story lines that stray too far from the shows "center". The Tim/Lyla thing seemed to come from nowhere, and was completely unneccessary. I suspect and hope that is why Carlotta is gone. As much as I liked her and Matt, the story lines need to stay closer to school and football. How does this racism affect Smash's performance on the field? I am very worried about this show that I LOVE not seeing rating increases up against repeats. We need these characters back in the stands and on the field at the end of the show, pulling their stories together, and giving these wonderful performances some credibility. Does anyone else feel the same?

Friday Night Lights - Jumping the Gun
Praise the Lord it was another Riggins filled Friday Night Lights!
This episode begins with Smash and his "advisor" Noel taking meetings with various recruiters at his house. Mama is none too happy about this. Everybody wants a verbal commitment from Smash except TMU, which is where he has always wanted to go. College is just the stepping stone for Smash to get into the Pro's, but to his mother it's also his education.
After Tami runs into Smash's mom at the market being accosted by a recruiter, she talks to Eric, and Eric in turn talks to Smash. Smash and his "advisor" Noel of course. Coach's advice "don't rush into anything, read the fine print and listen to your mother". Smash doesn't have a father figure in his life, so he listens to Coach.
By the end of the episode, Smash finally gets his talk with the TMU recruiter and they offer him a free ride. Smash gives TMU a verbal commitment, then gives his Momma some flowers. For all of Smash's posturing he's not such a bad kid.
At the Taylor household, we have a couple of things going on. First off, Julie remembers! But I'll get back to that later.
Shelly gets the results that she "passed" some Real Estate exam she must have taken. In her excitement she starts talking about adding another phone line at the Taylor's for her cold calling. Eric and Tami exchange the "it doesn't look like she's moving out anytime soon" look. Later, after Shelly records "The Office" over one of his football games, Eric asks her when exactly she is going to be moving out? Eric apologizes for that coming out like it did, but Shelly takes the hint and moves out.
Tami and Shelly meet for lunch and there are no hard feelings. Shelly has decided to move to Dallas. I'm not sure how her and Riggins are going to hook up with her in Dallas...? I am happy to see Shelly go because she distracts from the other story lines without adding much of substance.
Back to Riggins. It looks like he's been spending the night in the school locker room. and when Coach finds out he kicks him out of there. He goes home (his original home), and finds an eviction notice on the door, with no sign of his brother Billy. He spots Billy's girlfriend (his ex-girlfriend) packing her car. It seems her and Billy broke up after Billy lost his job. Riggins offers her his Dad's address in case she was interested in a Riggins trifecta. Ouch!
Later, Riggins finds his brother sitting on the lawn, looking like hell, and mumbling about having lost his keys. They go inside and mend some bridges. It seems Riggins may be back home, if they can find Billy a job, and the money for the mortgage.
Meanwhile, Julie can't tell her Dad about Riggins without admitting she had been drinking. After thinking "you spoiled rotten little...", she finds Riggins and apologizes, and then right before the big game fesses up to Dad.
After the game, probably Saturday morning, Coach finds Riggins. How do they always know where to find him? He's homeless most of the time? Anyway, I digress. Coach apologizes for jumping to conclusions about the other night finding him with Julie. "It's OK" says Tim. Coach explains that he has been riding him, giving him a hard time, falsely accusing him of things, and all the while, Tim has been looking after his daughter, taking the fall for her, and never once complaining. Coach tells Tim as a father, not as a coach, he is an honorable man. "Thank you, Sir".
Unfortunately the "honorable man" speech didn't come quite early enough. Prior to the Coach's visit, Billy and Tim encountered a road block. That is a choice between two tasks on the Amazing Race, and it is here as well. They drive over to the Meth Lab, or Tim's old home (3 homes ago?) to grab his stuff. You'll recall that when Tim left for the liquor store he never returned. Finding no-one home they go in, Tim grabs his stuff, and they are out of there. However, in his haste, Tim knocks his ex-roommates gun off the banister. Against Billy's better judgement, Tim stops to fish it out from under the table to return it to the banister. While retrieving the gun Tim finds a wad of money in a ziploc bag taped to the bottom of the table. Here's the roadblock. Tim says, "This is the mortgage Billy". They grab it and run. Is it really stealing if the money belongs to a drug dealer? Yes, son it is.
Lastly we have the hotly contested game between the Dillon Panther's and their "guests" the Laribee Lions. It's great to have football again in Dillon! The families we love are in the stands, their problems left outside the football stadium to be resolved after the game. The game is back and forth all night, with Dillon being down in the final minutes of the game. The play coach calls is taking Riggins into the end zone until, out of nowhere, the Laribee coach tackles him at about the 5 yd line. Of course, the Panthers win because coaches can't do that!
We finish with movie night "Mom's choice" at the Taylor's. All is wonderful in Dillon, TX.
