The season premiere of "The Next Great American Band" airs tonight at 8/7 C on FOX. This show was heavily advertised during American Idol, Season 6 and tonight we will get a glimpse as to whether if it will deliver quality talent, interesting back stories, and bands we will root for.
The second hour of this premiere creates a problem for me, as it goes up against "Friday Night Lights". I hope this is a one time thing, but I doubt it. There has been a lot of talk lately about the fact that Nielsen ratings are taking into account DVR playbacks. They concern the networks because viewers are fast forwarding through the commercials (bad for advertising dollars). Shows on the bubble and being watched heavily via DVR may be pulled even with a decent viewership because advertisers won't pay the big bucks. For that reason, I'm watching Friday Night Lights live.
According to FOX:
About The Show
The producers behind the megahit phenomenon "American Idol" take the musical reality genre to a whole new performance level as they search for "The Next Great American Band," a new competition series airing on FOX. Singer and songwriter John Rzeznik (the Goo Goo Dolls), legendary percussionist and performer Sheila E. (whose hits include "The Glamorous Life" and "A Love Bizarre") and Australian TV personality Ian "Dicko" Dickson ("Australian Idol") serve as judges while Dominic Bowden ("New Zealand Idol") hosts.
From the auditions, judges Rzeznik, Sheila E. and Dickson will narrow down the hopefuls to 12 semifinalist bands who will perform weekly in front of a live studio audience. From hair bands to hip-hop, classic rockers to country crooners, every music genre is represented as bands perform the varied styles each week. Then it will be up to viewers to vote who should win a contract with 19 Recordings and earn the title of "The Next Great American Band."
